Some speakers (myself included) had a reputation for really teaching valuable information for most of the presentation followed by 10-minutes describing an irresistible offer for their wares. I always found that (even at pitchfests), the more I actually taught the audience, the more of my courses they bought.

Now are you a carpenter? Sorry, not yet. Just having some tools (even if you know how to use them) doesn't make you a carpenter.

Here's a real life story...

Several years ago (long before there was an internet), I was a guest speaker at a Gary Halbert marketing seminar. If you don't know Gary, he used to be one of the top marketing gurus in the world.

Anyway, I spoke about the Secrets From The Lost Art of Common Sense Marketing (the title of my first best-selling book), and offered the audience a chance to subscribe to my marketing newsletter, The Antin Marketing Letter.

A week or so later, I got a rather interesting

We spent a day together and I have to admit, it was the most fun I'd ever had with a client. Unlike most clients, this guy absorbed and understood virtually everything I talked about. He wasn't just learning my techniques...
